Wool sample

Acquired at a guild ‘stash bust’ I thought, at the time, it would be interesting to try something finer than my normal handspun wool or commercial cotton which seems to be the norm for most of my weaving projects recently.  I suspect the cones had sat for a while, possibly in some direct light as one cone has quite a few breaks on the outer layer.  The other one is better so I’ve started with that one and will have to unwind the first until I hit continuous yarn.

The yarn is 2 ply and works out to be 34 wraps per inch.  On the loom the sett is 24 ends per inch, 2 epi per dent in a 12 dent reed.

Dot was dressed with enough warp for a mans scarf and rather than add any color contrasts for the point twill pattern I am using the same white yarn in warp and weft.  This allows the reflection from the yarn at different angles to show the pattern.

This sample was to see how the yarn would behave and stand up to weaving and so far there have not been any problems (minus a couple of mis-counts on my part!).  The next and real project with this yarn will be a full-sized shawl with the same design.  Woven on Big Mac for the extra width, but only once the looms are moved to the new studio.

  1. This warp weft being the same yarn and colour really works well! I love the pattern.
