KiwiWeave, LLC was setup a year after Anne and I arrived in Southeast Tennessee from New Zealand where we had spent a year living and working in the capital, Wellington.
The weaving side of the business originated back in 2001 as a hobby taken up when I began weaving on a loom built by my father. The fiber and spinning came along a few years later with I acquired a good old working wheel from a friend of a friend.
Through a number of international moves, various guild memberships, and a few more looms and wheels, the idea to make the growing hobby into a small business took shape.
With time since I retired from Public Service, and space, the business is now firmly up and running. Next task is create some more space so all looms and wheels can be out and used at one time.
Sometime events overtake. In December 2017 our workshop/storage shed burnt down – rodents wanting a warm spot were to blame. The rebuild took some planning, but , logically, included more space for a studio. Over time the plans grew and the major project of the rebuild started. Hopefully, sometime this year I’ll have all the space I need for all my looms and wheels and much more.
Anne took up challenge to keep busy during the COVID years and started making her unique ‘Para-Tassels’ and has had some successes at the various festivals we have been to. It seemed a bit unfair to monopolize the name for the studio by just my weaving side we thought it far more appropriate to name it the ‘Oak & Fern Studio’ (Oak & Fern being the name we call our forest property) and add ‘Home of Kiwiweave and Para-Tassels.
